General information

Prof.dr. Jacques Thomassen is distinguished professor (Universiteitshoogleraar) of political science in the School of Management and Governance. He is also General Secretary of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He teaches courses on Democratic Theory and Political Culture. He is involved in several large scale projects of comparative social research.

Research interests

Jacques Thomassen is working on several collaborative research programs, a.o. a democratic audit in the Netherlands (with Rudy B. Andeweg). He was one of the coordinators of the European Election Study 2004). He is also involved in the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES).

Curriculum Vitae

Jacques Thomassen received his doctorate in the Social Sciences from the (then) Catholic University of Tilburg in 1976. He was appointed professor of political science at the University of Twente in 1977. He is a member and General Secretary of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He was a visiting scholar at the universities of Michigan, Harvard, Mannheim and the European University Institute. He was twice a fellow in residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (NIAS). He has or had a leading position in several national and international research programs. He was a founding member and first chair of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES).
